About

Paul

Paul Southgate: seasoned luxury travel aficionado, discerning critic of hotels, restaurants, and bars, and the man who believes life’s too short for bad service or soggy toast.

Paul’s views on Restaurants

Paul believes a restaurant should be an experience, not just a meal. It’s about the perfect blend of flavour, atmosphere, and service—where everything aligns. Mediocre food? No thank you. He’s never shy about calling out the hype, but when it’s good, it’s exceptional. And yes, there’s always room for dessert.

Paul’s views on Hotels

He doesn’t do ‘basic’ when it comes to hotels. He expects flawless service, character, and design that doesn’t scream ‘chain hotel’. It’s about the little things—luxury that doesn’t need to shout. And if you can’t sleep well in a bed that’s worth more than your rent? That’s a problem.

Paul’s views on Bars

A bar isn’t just about drinks—it’s about atmosphere, style, and a touch of mystery. Cocktails should be crafted, not concocted, and the lighting should flatter, not frighten. Whether it’s a secret speakeasy or a polished cocktail lounge, he’s after a place that makes you want to stay another round.

His values

Paul values authenticity, excellence, and the kind of understated luxury that doesn’t need to scream for attention. He believes in the finer details—whether in travel, food, or service—and holds a deep respect for craftsmanship. Mediocrity is never tolerated, and he’s always on the hunt for the next hidden gem.

Bio

Paul Southgate spent a decade as the managing director of the UK’s top luxury travel company, specialising in bespoke city escapes and spa retreats that redefined relaxation—far beyond soggy towels and Enya playlists.

His career is a mix of travel, events, and a dash of digital. It began at 17 with a summer role at a major UK balloon festival, where he quickly moved from helper to event committee member. Organising one of the UK’s largest free outdoor events before he was old enough to order a drink—he was already ahead of the game.

Paul then ventured into travel and events just as budget airlines were opening up Europe to the masses. Later, he made the leap into the digital realm, taking on a role as director for client services at an agency focused on online communities and engagement.

In 2011, he returned to his roots in travel, founding a luxury holiday company. What started as a passion project rapidly grew into a £1m-a-year business by 2019, quickly becoming the UK’s go-to for those who view luxury travel not as an escape, but as an essential part of life.
